Anna Marguerite Henderson

Anna Marguerite Henderson was born February 16 1897 in Payne, Ohio. From the records I have found (so far), she was the oldest of four children of William Henderson and Laura F (Clawson) Henderson.

1900 Census

During the 1900 Census, Anna was 3 years old. Her family lived in Harrison Township, within Payne Village, in Paulding County, Ohio.

By the 1910 Census, Anna and her family lived in Otsego, Michigan. They lived at 555 W River Street. The house is no longer there. Anna, who went by Annie around the time of the Census, was in school at this time. One thing I note from this census record is that Anna is the only one in her family that can read and write. It makes me wonder how much intermediary work my great grandmother had to do for her parents once she was able to read well enough.

Andrew and Anna’s wedding record

When Anna was 19 years old she married Andrew Julien. The wedding date was September 6, 1916. They were married in Allegan, Michigan. The wedding took place before judge S.C. Brady.

1920 Census
1930 Census

By 1920 the family had grown to include one child, my grandfather Kenneth. By 1930 the family had grown to 3 children with the births of Gerald and Nadine.

In 1920 the family lived at 137 West River Street (picture above shows the house as it looks currently) and in 1930 they lived at 325 West River Street (the house is no longer there). Right between two paper mills. I spoke with someone at the Otsego Area Historical Society about the homes on River Street by the factory and they confirmed my guess that the homes along that road were made for factory workers.

1940 Census

The 1940 Census gives a little more details about Anna. It seems she finished school through 7th grade.

Anna lived in Allegan County for the remainder of her life. Sadly, in 1963, at the age of 66, Anna died in a serious car accident. The couple was about 5 miles east of Plainwell, Michigan on M-89. Andrew was driving when the accident happened. The accident involved another vehicle. The driver of that other car died. He was a young airman from Kalamazoo. After the accident Andrew and a passenger in the airman’s car were admitted to Burgess Hospital in Kalamazoo in serious condition. Andrew survived.
